Taking Stock of Your Future
Welcome back to “San Diego Living,” I’m your host, Samantha Reed. Today we are joined by renowned San Diego Probate Attorney Steve Bliss. Steve, thanks for being here.
Steve, many people find estate planning daunting. Where do you suggest someone begin?
Starting Strong: Inventory of Assets
Samantha, that’s a great question. I always tell my clients the first step is taking inventory of your assets. It may sound straightforward, but it’s crucial to get a clear picture of what you own.
Ordinarily, people think about their home and bank accounts. But remember to include everything – investments, retirement funds, vehicles, jewelry, even sentimental items. Think of it as a financial snapshot of your life. This inventory becomes the foundation for all other estate planning decisions. Consequently, a complete and accurate list ensures that your wishes are carried out precisely.
For example, I once worked with a client who thought he only had a modest retirement account and his home. However, when we dug deeper, we discovered forgotten stock options from a previous job worth tens of thousands of dollars! He was incredibly relieved we uncovered that asset, as it significantly impacted his estate plan.
Moreover, consider the emotional value of your possessions. Do you have heirlooms or family treasures you want to pass down? Clearly identifying these items in your inventory helps avoid confusion and potential disputes among loved ones later on.
Planning for Peace of Mind
According to a recent AARP study, over 50% of adults do not have a will. This highlights the critical need for individuals to take proactive steps in planning for their future.
Steve, thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us today. You clearly make a difference in people’s lives during a sensitive time.
